Two easy weekends from Singapore: Johor Bahru, just across the Causeway, or Melaka, a few hours up the road for heritage and food.
In short
- Short trip, shopping and theme parks: Johor Bahru.
- History, food and a proper getaway: Melaka.
- Families with young children: Puteri Harbour and Iskandar Puteri.

Best for: Heritage, food and a slower weekend
A UNESCO heritage city with the Jonker Street night market on weekend evenings. Further away, so better for two nights.
Hotels in MelakaGetting there and around
- The Causeway links Woodlands to Johor Bahru city centre; the Second Link links Tuas to the west of Johor.
- Bring your passport. Singapore-registered cars need a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) to enter Malaysia.
- Melaka is a longer coach or car trip from Singapore, so leave early.
When to go
- Border queues are longest on Friday evenings, weekend mornings and the eve of public holidays.
- Travelling mid-morning or on a weekday makes the crossing much quicker.
Tips
- Check the checkpoint traffic before you leave, and keep a Touch ’n Go card ready for tolls and parking.
- Prices on hote.my are in ringgit by default; switch the currency to SGD in the top bar if you prefer.
- Choose free cancellation so a long queue never costs you a night.
